| Colchicine is a natural product and secondary metabolite, originally extracted from plants of the genus Colchicum. It is used to treat rheumatic complaints and especially gout.Earlier it was also prescribed for its cathartic and emetic problems. Its present medicinal use is mainly in the treatment of gout which means a painful inflammation of the big toe and foot caused by defects in uric acid metabolism resulting in deposits of the acid and its salts in the blood and joints. Currently it is being investigated for its potential use as an anti-cancer drug. |
